![]() ![]() Let me start of by saying that, although this is a page dedicated to Candlebox, it's not an information or download site. This page is designed to express my views on my all-time favorite band. I've found the internet to be great tool for which to relay opinions and receive great feedback from those with common interests, and that's really what I'm interested in. If you ARE looking for a great page on Candlebox, their offical "Boxheads" site (check out the link at the bottom of the page) is a spectacular source of information, audio/video downloads, and even merchandise, so I highly recommend it.
Candlebox, in my opinion, is one of the greatest bands of the decade. I was first turned on to them back in early 1993 when I heard one of the most original and intense songs blare out of the radio like a burst of energy: And I'll cry for you, yes I'll die for you; pain in my heart it is real; and I'll tell you now how I'll feel inside, feel in my heart it's for you! At this time, the band had already released "Change" which got limited airplay at first along with a brief appearance on "Beavis and Butthead". "You" received much more attention and led to the group's startem. ![]() ![]() One of the songs that didn't make it on the first album, "Can't Give In", did end up making it on the "Airheads" soundtrack. For those of you who haven't heard the song, I suggest you do. It's a great one! ![]() ![]() "Lucy", Candlebox's follow up album, was released in 1995. It was not the huge success the debut album was, but for me, as well as other fans I'm sure, it was definetly not a let-down. "Simple Lessons" and "Bothered" displayed the traditional high-intensity hard-hitting Candlebox effort while songs like "Understanding" and "Best Friend" added a new dimension to the band's music. "Vulger Before Me" was a song that particularly captured me through Kevin Martin's heart-felt vocals of a desperate plea to help a loved one and re-build a relationship. ![]() ![]() I had the opportunity to see Candlebox in concert back in December of 95. I was a little concerned about the word-of-mouth I had received about them not performing well live. Those rumors were put to rest however as soon as they filled the stage and started up with "Simple Lessons". Not only is this band good live, their Great! I've seen a lot of bands in concert over the years, and this band can perform with the best of them. I encourage any fan who appreciates great music, not to miss this band the next time they play in your town. I saw them again in July of 98, a few weeks before their newest album, "Happy Pills" was released. Man, these guys haven't missed a step. They put on an unbelievable show and were getting a huge pop from the many die-hard Candlebox fans in attendance. Kevin really interacted with the audience this time around and expressed how appreciative the bands is for the success they've received from their fans. I thought that was really great. Like I mentioned the show was great. At one point, I think when the band was trying to decide which song to do next, someone form the audience yelled ACDC! Suddenly, Peter started up with the all-too-familiar guitar riff of "Back in Black". The rest of the band joined in and played the whole song with Kevin doing the best impression of ACDC's singer that I've ever heard. This cover-trip lasted a few more songs, including "Sweet Emotions" by Aerosmith, and "Paradise City" by GNR. These guys really seem to be having a good time on this tour.
![]() ![]() In the summer of 1998, I was incredibly pumped when I heard my favorite radio station announce that a brand new song by Candlebox is coming up next. I was expecting to hear a new rocker, but ended up listening to one of the deepest and moving balads I've ever heard. "It's Alright" just blows me away everytime I hear it. "I got lost some time ago; lost in your song, your touch, your smile, and where I want to grow old". The lyrics in this song are incredibly well-written and honest, that of which I've come to expect from Candlebox. "Sometimes" is another amazing balad which holds a lot of meaning. "10,000 Horses" is the first track on Happy Pills which really sets the mood for the rest of the album, displaying their traditional high-intensity style. All in all, I think Happy Pills displays a softer, but more thought out sound than the first two albums. While some would say the debut album can never be topped (which in my opinion is the best album ever), the music on Happy Pills isn't forced, and almost gives me the sense that the band wasn't under as much pressure, as one would think, to live up to the first album. I know, this album has to be a delight for fellow Candlebox fans, and I really think this one will earn the band many new fans. Great job guys!
